Mission details: Hungary, Parliamentary elections, 12 April 2026 | OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights

Parliamentary Briefings, 10 April 2026, Budapest

A privilege to monitor Hungary’s election yesterday. Attended 14 polling stations, amazed how election officials ran the day following protocols transparently & to the letter, from opening of first PS at 6am to counting ballots after polls closed at 7pm. No electronic counting just hand counts by team done 4 times to ensure veracity. Impressive!

As monitors we were impartial, merely taking notes to ensure compliance. But now that it is over i want to say it was inspiring to see democracy (which we here take for granted), in action. An 80% voter turn out! Protocols followed assiduously!

Despite an unfair playing field with pro-govt biases in mainstream media & use of government resources for election advertising the will of the ppl & independent media prevailed. I was privileged to witness history in the making and watch the triumph of democracy over authoritarianism.

Parliamentary Briefing, 11 April 2026, Budapest | Briefing on the Hungarian electoral system and our role at the opening of, visits to, and closing of polling stations & vote counts. Election day tomorrow starts for us, 120 Parliamentarian observers, at 5am, & polls close at 7pm. Exciting day ahead!

I recall the bloody Hungarian revolution against Communism in the 50s, so was moved today to see history repeat itself in a bloodless coup, as the people used the power of the vote to oust Orban’s authoritarian regime that used hate and fear to divide the nation.

It is why OSCE was created during the Cold War: to promote democracy, rule of law, a free Press, and the power of the vote for citizens to fight authoritarianism. Today democracy won.

As I listened to chants of “freedom” and ” Russia go home” I was deeply moved by the power of a people to unite & take control of their destiny, using a piece of paper.

Congratulations to Peter Magyar, the Tisza Party and the people of Hungary! Thank you.
